Two Top Rated Espresso Machines!

The Breville Barista Express

Breville Barista ExpressThe Breville Company got its modest beginnings in Australia in 1932 when Bill O’Brien and Harry Norville put together about $750 of their money. This in itself was no small feat since the world was in the midst of a depression and money was a scarce commodity. The original intent of their new venture was to build and sell radios.

It wasn’t until the 1960s that John O’Briens son established what is known as the Breville Research and Development Center. This finally enabled them to design and produce their very own products in Australia. Breville later went on to develop some of the most iconic kitchen appliances in Australia.

Spring forward to 2013 now Breville designs and manufactures some of the highest customer rated kitchen appliances around. Two of those appliances are the Breville Barista Express BES860XL and Breville BES840XL Infuser espresso machines. These two machines are very similar in appearance but contain major differences inside and we will compare the two so you can make an intelligent choice at time of purchase.

The Barista Express BES8670XL Details.

  • This Breville espresso machine is a self-grinding model which means you will be able to grind your beans just seconds before using them. This preserves all the delicate flavors that rapidly dissipate once the bean is ground.
  • Contained inside the machine is a 15 bar Italian pump as well as a 1600 W thermocoil system.
  • A purge function has been incorporated that automatically adjusts the water temperature after you have used steam. This ensures that you get the best espresso extraction temperature possible.
  • There is also a 67 fluid ounce removable water tank that also has an integrated handle.
  • The burr grinder that has been used is a stainless steel conical burr type that sits below the half pound sealed bean hopper.Storage Tray
  • To make sure that the water is evenly distributed over the grounds the machine uses a pre-brew function and flat shower head. In addition there is a feature that extracts excess water from the filter basket after you create your shot making puck disposal easier.
  • The front control panel contains a power button, grind amount selector switch, filter size button and indicator lights, steam pressure gauge, program button, 1 cup/2 cup buttons, clean indicator and the hot water steam indicator.
  • Included with the machine are both dual wall and single wall filters. The dual wall filler is used for those just getting started with machine and learning to use it. The single wall filter is for those who want more of a challenge and have already become familiar with machine operation.
  • For effortless milk steaming a 360° swivel action steam wand has been included along with a cup warming tray on top.
  • The BES860XL comes in three great colors as well, stainless steel, cranberry and black sesame.
  • A hideaway storage cabinet has been designed in for the included cleaning tools.
  • Some of the included accessories are razor dose trimming tool, 54 mm portafilter, single and dual wall filter baskets, coffee scoop, tamper, milk jug and cleaning tools.

Summary.

As mentioned earlier the Barista and Infuser look a lot alike but the infuser is does not come with a number of items. The difference between the two in price is about $100 and it will be up to you whether the items included in the Express make the extra $100 worth it. In our opinion the addition of the coffee grinder alone makes it a worthwhile consideration. If you do choose the Barista please do not use oily coffee beans in the grinder as shown in this video.

  • First among the not incorporated items is the lack of a coffee grinder and bean Hopper.
  • Next the removable water tank on the Barista is 67 ounces and on the Infuser 61 ounces.
  • The razor dose trimming tool included with the BES870XL has been omitted on the BES840XL.
  • Both machines are very highly rated by consumers coming in at 4.3 stars out of 5. Here is a representative comment from one happy customer.
